A friendship that started before either of you had a phone has a specific problem: almost none of it is digital.
The first fifteen years exist as prints in two different houses, in albums belonging to two sets of parents, mixed in with family photographs neither of you has looked at since school. The friendship is long and well documented and completely inaccessible.
That is the gap, and closing it is most of what makes this gift good.
Where the material actually is
Not on your phone, and not on theirs. In rough order of yield:
- Your parents’ albums. Birthdays, holidays, the years they were always at your house
- Their parents’ albums. The other half of the same set, and usually the better half
- School photographs — class groups, sports day, annual day, whatever the school produced
- Their mother. Reliably the person in either family who kept things properly
- Old digital folders, for the teenage years, on a family computer or a dead laptop
⚠️ Ask their mother. This is the single highest-yield move on the page. She has photographs of the two of you that your own family does not, she will enjoy being asked, and she will usually keep it quiet if you say it is a surprise.
Getting prints into a file
A phone is fine — no scanner needed. Lay each print flat, indirect daylight, no flash, phone directly overhead, one at a time. The full method covers the detail, including never forcing a photograph off a sticky album page.
Photograph the backs too, wherever anything is written. Dates and names in someone’s mother’s handwriting are worth as much as the images.
Structure: eras, not years
A twenty-year friendship has phases everyone involved would name the same way.
- Before either of you remembers, according to your parents
- Primary school
- The years one of you moved and it survived anyway
- School, which is really two or three eras
- After school, when it became a choice rather than a circumstance
- Now
That second-to-last chapter is the one worth marking. Childhood friendships are inherited from geography — same street, same class, same parents’ friends. The point at which it stopped being convenient and continued anyway is the actual subject of the book, and almost nobody says it out loud.
Sizing it
| Format | Holds | Ours |
|---|---|---|
| Print pack | 30 loose photographs | ₹270 |
| Photo magazine | 32 to 160 images, in order, with words | ₹499 to ₹1,099 |
| Photo diary | A record plus pages they write in | ₹699 to ₹1,299 |

About four photographs fill a page, so twenty years is usually 24 to 32 pages. Flat ₹70 delivery anywhere in India.
Two copies is the obvious move and most people do not think of it. The material belongs to both of you equally, the design is done once, and giving one and keeping one is the honest shape of the object.
The captions
You have two decades of shared reference and nobody else can read any of it. Use that.
The captions in a book like this should be close to unintelligible to an outsider — names of people from one school, a phrase from a specific afternoon, the thing their father used to say. That is not a flaw in the writing. It is the entire point of a gift between two people who have known each other that long.
Include the disagreements about what happened. You will remember an incident differently. Print both versions.
The occasions this suits
It does not need one, and that is worth saying. A gift given for no reason lands harder than the same gift on a birthday, particularly between old friends where the birthday message has been an uninterrupted twenty-year streak of the same three words.
Where it does fit an occasion: a wedding, a big birthday, a move abroad, or the year one of you becomes a parent — all moments where the childhood version of the friendship is visibly becoming something else.
When not to make one
When you have drifted. A twenty-year archive presented after four years of silence is a lot to hand someone. Re-establish contact first; the book is not a way of doing that.
When the shared childhood was difficult. Some are. A commemorative object about a hard period is the wrong instrument.
When their family situation makes the asking awkward. If approaching their mother is complicated for any reason, work from your side only and make a smaller book.
When you have two weeks. Digitising two families’ albums is a six-week project.
Timing
5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, flat ₹70 anywhere. Dispatch is weekly on Mondays, so a Friday order catches that week’s dispatch and a weekend order waits seven days. Add two to four days for design and your proof approval.
Budget six weeks: an afternoon in each family’s albums, a couple of weeks of chasing, then the edit and the order.
Frequently asked
Where do I find photographs from a childhood friendship? Both sets of parents’ albums, and school photographs. Ask their mother specifically — she has pictures your family does not and she will enjoy being asked.
How do I digitise old prints? A phone works. Flat, indirect daylight, no flash, directly overhead, one print at a time. Shoot the backs too where anything is written.
How many pages for a twenty-year friendship? About four photographs fill a page, so 24 to 32 pages — roughly 96 to 128 images.
Should I make one copy or two? Two. The material belongs to both of you equally and the design is done once, so the second copy is just another copy.
Does it need an occasion? No, and it is better without one. Between old friends a gift for no reason lands harder than the same gift on a birthday.
