Gifts for a Friend Going Abroad to Study

Twenty-three kilos, a room in a country where they know nobody, and a farewell week where everyone gives them something. The gift to send in month two.

Two facts shape this completely, and neither is about taste.

Twenty-three kilos. Every gift given before the flight competes with their own possessions for a hard weight limit, and they are already trying to fit a winter they have never experienced into one suitcase.

The farewell week is saturated. Every relative, every school friend, every neighbour. Then they land, and it stops entirely.

The month-two rule

Window Constraint What works
Before the flight Baggage weight Flat, light, or nothing
First month Distance, customs Something posted or carried
Settled in None to speak of Anything

Month two is where the gift should go. By then the orientation excitement has gone, the weather has turned, the coursework is real, and nobody has sent them anything in six weeks.

If you give one thing, give it then.

Before they fly, if you must

Flat, light, or nothing:

  • Letters, numbered and marked with when to open them — the first week, the first bad day, the first exam
  • Something that slides into a laptop sleeve
  • Food that is legal at the destination and survives a flight
  • The documents folder, organised
  • Nothing at all, and driving them to the airport instead

⚠️ Check the food rules. Australia and New Zealand confiscate and fine; several countries refuse dairy and meat outright.

What to send once they are there

Student rooms abroad are furnished, generic, and contain nothing referring to anything.

Format Why it works Ours
Print pack 30 loose images, tape them to a bare wall ₹270
Photo magazine The years here, in order, with words ₹499 to ₹1,099
Card deck 30 to 60 specifics, opened one at a time From ₹999

About four photographs fill a page, so a friendship is usually 16 to 24 pages. Flat ₹70 delivery anywhere in India.

⚠️ We deliver within India only. For anything crossing a border, have it made and delivered here, then carried out by them or by the next person flying. In most families and friend groups somebody travels within a few months, and it is free, untracked by customs, and weighs nothing.

If it has to be carried, put it in their hands a week before they fly and tell them not to open it until they land. That is the practical version of the month-two gift.

Make it the place, not the friendship

The strongest version is a record of here — the city, the college, the flat, the specific places you two spent four years in — rather than a general record of the friendship.

Somebody in a new country is not homesick for an abstraction. They are homesick for a particular road at a particular time of evening, and that is a photographable thing that nobody photographs because it is always there.

Collecting four years of material before it scatters covers the method if you are pulling from a whole batch.

The things that help more than objects

  • Being reachable at their hours, not yours, for the first month
  • Sending ordinary photographs of home, unprompted, forever — most people stop after a fortnight
  • Handling one thing here for them: a bank, a bill, a parcel
  • Booking your own visit, with dates, so it is real

The unprompted photographs are the actual gift. They cost nothing, and the friendships that survive a masters abroad are almost always the ones where someone kept doing this.

What to avoid

Anything heavy, framed or fragile. Every kilo is a decision.

Anything requiring a plug. Voltage and sockets differ.

A group card everyone signed. It is the default and it says nothing. The version that works takes four weeks and is a genuinely different object.

A promise to visit with no date. Everyone makes it. Almost nobody converts it.

When not to give anything

When they are over their allowance. They will not tell you. Ask.

When the visa or the funding is not confirmed. Both fall through more often than people expect.

When they are anxious rather than excited. Plenty of people leave frightened, especially alone and especially the first time.

When the money would be better as a visit. It usually would.

Timing

5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, flat ₹70 anywhere in India. Dispatch is weekly on Mondays, so a Friday order catches that week’s dispatch and a weekend order waits seven days. Add two to four days for design and your proof approval.

Work backwards from the flight, not the farewell. About a month out, so it is in their hands a week before they go.

Frequently asked

What should I give a friend going abroad to study? Something flat and light before they fly, or nothing then and something once they have landed. Every gift competes with a twenty-three kilo limit.

When is the best time to give it? Month two. The farewell week is saturated and then nothing arrives for six weeks, which is exactly when the difficulty starts.

Can you deliver outside India? No — delivery is within India, flat ₹70. Have it made here and carried out by them or the next traveller.

What should the photo book be about? The place, not the friendship in general. People abroad are homesick for a specific road at a specific hour, not for an abstraction.
