A first job is a narrow window: it is the last point at which he owns almost nothing by choice. Six months in he will have bought the bag, the shoes and the desk setup to his own specification, and the whole category of useful-object gifts closes for years.

Two gifts, and they are not the same

The equipment half
The trick is to buy the thing he has not yet realised he needs, because the things he already knows about are the things he will buy himself in week two.
What he does not anticipate:
- The bag that survives a commute, if his current one is from college
- Something for the desk that is not a gadget — a decent lamp, a real notebook
- Whatever makes the commute tolerable. He has not done it yet and has no idea
- Lunch, solved. A tiffin, or the good flask. Unromantic and used every single day
- One good shirt, if the dress code shifted and he has not caught up
What to avoid: anything with a specification he will have opinions about within a month. Headphones, keyboard, mouse, monitor.
The marker half
This is the one people skip, and it is the one that survives the job.
A first job is a genuine threshold — the end of being a student, the start of a salary and a commute. In ten years he will not remember the flask.

Formal clothing you chose alone. Sizing and taste, both.

When not to give anything
When the job is not the one he wanted. Plenty of first jobs are compromises taken for money or a visa. Celebrating loudly reads as not having listened.
