Buying inside someone’s hobby feels like the safe option. It is usually the hard one.
Anyone serious about a hobby has already bought the good version of everything in it, has opinions about the brands, and knows what the next upgrade would be more precisely than you do. Buying gear for that person means either duplicating something or guessing at a specification.
There is a way around it, and it is the same shape in all three cases.

If he games
Do not buy peripherals. He has a mouse he has thought about more than you have thought about most things.

If he trains
Same rule, sharper. Kit is personal, sized, and already chosen.
Adjacent works: the recovery side, which people who train consistently neglect — proper sleep kit, a massage gun if he has not got one, food. The unglamorous half.
Also works: paying for the block of coaching or the race entry. It removes a decision he has been putting off rather than adding an object.
Avoid: anything sized. Shoes and clothing in particular.

If he travels

This is the row nobody uses, and it is the strongest one.
