Of everything that shifts between a screen and a page, skin is the one people notice. Nobody examines a printed sky and decides it is wrong. Everybody knows what their mother’s face looks like.
It is also the colour phone cameras handle least reliably, which means the problem usually starts long before printing.
Where it goes wrong, in order
1. The camera decided. Phone cameras apply automatic white balance and skin smoothing, and those decisions are made for a screen. Some handsets warm skin tones noticeably; some brighten them past accuracy.
2. The light was wrong. Indoor Indian lighting is the biggest single factor — warm bulbs push everything orange, tube lights push it green, and a mix of both does something worse. Why indoor photographs print orange →
3. The screen flattered it. A backlit display makes skin look luminous in a way reflected ink cannot. Why printed colours differ from screens →
4. Then it printed, and by that point three decisions have already been made.
What actually helps
Daylight, indirect. Near a window, not in direct sun. It is the single biggest improvement available and it costs nothing.
Turn off “beauty” and skin-smoothing modes before photographing anything you intend to print. Smoothing removes texture, and printed skin without texture reads as flat and slightly plastic.
One light source, not three. A room lit by a window and a tube light and a lamp gives skin three different casts across one face, and no correction fixes all three.
Send the original file. A photograph forwarded through a messaging app has been re-compressed, and compression damages the smooth gradients that skin is made of before it damages anything else. How to send photos without losing quality →

The range problem, said plainly
A photograph containing a very light-skinned and a very dark-skinned person is genuinely hard for any camera — the exposure that renders one correctly under-serves the other, and it is a limitation of the capture rather than the printing.
What helps: even, indirect light, and avoiding strong backlight. What does not: anything done afterwards.
What we do and do not do
We do not retouch, colour-correct or alter skin tones. No lightening, no smoothing, no adjustment. Your photographs print as your photographs.
That is a deliberate position rather than a limitation. Altering how somebody’s skin looks is not a technical decision and it is not ours to make on your behalf.
