Paper is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air and releases it again. In Chennai in August that is a real effect, and it is the environmental factor most likely to shorten the life of something printed in this country.
What humidity actually does
Cockling. The page takes up moisture unevenly and develops a gentle wave. Common in unbound loose prints, rare in a bound book where the binding holds pages flat.
Curling. A single sheet curls towards whichever side is drier. This is what happens to a print stuck to a wall with one edge free.
Blocking. Two sheets pressed together in high humidity can stick very slightly and mark each other when separated. This is why loose prints should not be stacked tightly in a damp month.
Softening of the cover. Cardstock takes an impression more easily when damp, so anything stacked on it leaves a mark.

The binding is doing most of the protecting, which is a genuine argument for a bound object over loose prints in a coastal city.
Four things that cost nothing
1. Do not store anything against an outside wall. Outside walls in humid cities carry moisture, and a book on a shelf against one takes it up. Interior wall, or the middle of a shelf.
2. Do not seal it in plastic. Counter-intuitive and important — a sealed bag traps moisture against the paper rather than keeping it out. Paper needs air.
3. Store magazines flat and albums upright. A softcover standing on a shelf in humid weather bends; a hardcover is built to stand.

A gently cockled print flattens under weight over about a week. Anything in the right-hand column does not recover.
The worst place in most Indian homes
Naming it, because it is where things get stored by default.
A cupboard against an outside wall, in a room that is shut most of the day. Moisture comes through the wall, and there is no air movement to take it away. Almost every damaged book we hear about came out of one.
Better, in order: a shelf on an interior wall in a room that is used; a drawer in a frequently opened cupboard; flat on a table under a cloth.
Not better: the top of a wardrobe (heat), a suitcase (sealed), or the bottom shelf of anything in a ground-floor room (rising damp).
