Rakhi Gift Ideas for Cousins

Cousin rakhi is a numbers problem before it is a gift problem. How to handle six of them without it costing a fortune or looking like a bulk order.

Cousin rakhi has a different shape from sibling rakhi, and the difference is arithmetic.

You do not have one cousin. In most Indian families you have four, or eight, or fourteen — spread across cities, at wildly different ages, some of whom you see yearly and some of whom you last spoke to at a wedding.

So this is a numbers problem before it is a gift problem, and solving it that way makes the whole thing straightforward.

Sort them into two groups

Group Who What they get
Close The ones you actually talk to Something specific, individually
The rest The ones you see at weddings The same thing, uniformly, without apology

Uniform is not lazy for the second group. Fourteen cousins cannot each get a considered gift, and pretending otherwise produces fourteen identical mediocre ones anyway. Decide the tier honestly and give the second group something good and identical.

The mistake is trying to personalise across the whole set and running out of attention by cousin five.

For the close ones

Cousins have an unusual property: you share grandparents and a set of family occasions, but not a house. That is a different archive from a sibling’s — thinner on daily life, unexpectedly rich on weddings, summers and the years everyone was at the same grandparents’ place.

That archive is the specific thing worth using, and nobody uses it.

Format What it suits Ours
Print pack 30 photographs from family occasions ₹270
Photo magazine The summers, the weddings, the years ₹499 to ₹1,099

About four photographs fill a page. Flat ₹70 delivery anywhere in India.

Where the photographs are: your parents’ albums and your aunts’. The cousin years are almost entirely documented by the previous generation, not by you. How to get old prints into a file is a two-evening job with a phone.

For the rest

Keep it simple and keep it the same:

  • The rakhi itself, posted early, which for many cousin relationships is the entire ritual
  • Sweets, if you are sending to households
  • Cash, in the return direction, at a consistent figure across the group

⚠️ Be consistent within the group. Cousins compare. Giving one of them noticeably more than the others is noticed at the next family gathering, and it is the one avoidable mistake here.

When cousin rakhi is not a gifting occasion

When you have not spoken in years. A rakhi to a cousin you last saw at a wedding in 2019 is a kind gesture; a considered personal gift is an odd one.

When the family group has already organised something. Larger families frequently do a collective arrangement. Join it rather than running a parallel one.

When there are fourteen of them and you are twenty-two. The thread and a message is a complete and normal version. Cost should not be the reason a cousin relationship becomes awkward.

When it is one-directional. If you have been sending for three years and nothing comes back, that is information rather than an oversight. Scale down without commentary.

Frequently asked

Do you give gifts to cousins on Rakhi? Commonly, yes, but not the same gift as to a sibling. Sort them into the ones you actually talk to and the rest — the second group gets something good and identical.

Is it rude to give cousins the same thing? No. Fourteen considered gifts is not achievable, and uniformity is honest. What is noticed is giving one cousin noticeably more than the others.

What is a good gift for a close cousin? A record of the family occasions you shared — the summers and weddings at your grandparents’. The photographs are in your parents’ and aunts’ albums, not yours.

When should I send rakhis to cousins in other cities? Three to four weeks out, and collect everyone’s current address in one family-group message a month ahead.
