A posting is a specific kind of separation and it is not the same as a move, which is why general long-distance advice fits it badly.
Armed forces, government service, merchant navy, a site posting, a rig, a project deployment, a field assignment. In India this is an enormous and largely unaddressed category, and it has four features that change what to send.
What makes a posting different
| Feature | Consequence for a gift |
|---|---|
| Fixed, known length | You can plan across it — a countdown actually works |
| Restricted contact | Written things carry far more than usual |
| Uncertain address | Delivery may be indirect, delayed, or impossible |
| Shared, spartan quarters | No space, no privacy, nothing fragile |
That third row is the one that catches people out. A posting address is frequently a field post office, a unit address, a camp, or a company site — with unpredictable forwarding and no useful tracking.
⚠️ Ask what actually reaches them before you send anything. Not what the address is — what reaches, how long it takes, and whether parcels get opened or inspected. They will know precisely.
Assume nothing arrives on time
The single most useful adjustment: decouple the gift from the date.
Birthdays and anniversaries during a posting are very likely to be marked late, and treating that as a failure makes both people feel worse. Send things when they will arrive, not when the calendar says, and say so plainly: this is for the 12th, it will get to you whenever it gets to you.
The alternative that works better still: give it before they go, timed. A stack of dated envelopes, a numbered set of cards, a book with sections — handed over in person, opened on a schedule they control.
What actually suits a posting
Written things, in quantity. Contact may be limited to short calls at odd hours. Something long, on paper, that can be read repeatedly in a bunk is worth more here than in almost any other separation. Open-when letters are the structured form, and a posting is the situation they were invented for.
Something rationed. A numbered set opened weekly across a six-month posting turns a fixed sentence into a sequence.
Flat, light, unbreakable. Quarters are shared and small. Nothing that needs a shelf, nothing that can break in a kit bag.
Photographs, printed. Where connectivity is poor or personal devices are restricted, a phone gallery is not accessible in the way it is at home. Printed images are the only version that always works.
| Format | Suits a posting because | Ours |
|---|---|---|
| Print pack | 30 loose images, no shelf, goes on a locker door | ₹270 |
| Photo magazine | Flat, one object, 8 to 24 pages | ₹499 to ₹699 |
| Card deck | Numbered, rationed over months, box-sized | From ₹999 |
| Photo diary | A record plus blank pages they fill out there | ₹699 to ₹1,299 |
About four photographs fill a page. Flat ₹70 delivery anywhere in India.
The diary is worth singling out for this case. A posting produces a great deal of time and very little to do with it, and a record that includes blank pages gives it somewhere to go — which comes back with them.
Agree what happens if it is extended
Worth doing before they go, because extensions are the norm rather than the exception and they are the point at which a carefully planned separation stops feeling manageable.
Decide in advance what you both do if the return date moves by a month, or three. Not emotionally — practically. Whether the countdown restarts or stops. Whether the leave you booked gets moved or spent alone. Whether anything you were saving for the homecoming gets sent out instead.
It sounds unromantic and it is the single most useful conversation available before a posting. Couples who have had it describe an extension as an inconvenience; couples who have not describe it as the worst week of the whole deployment.
For the family at home
Worth saying, because it is the half nobody gifts: a long posting is hard on the person who stayed, and in India that person is frequently managing a household, children and both sets of parents alone.
If you are a friend or a relative rather than the partner, that is where a gift is most useful, and it is almost never where one goes.
What to avoid
Anything perishable. Transit times are unpredictable by design.
Anything valuable. Shared quarters, and parcels that pass through several hands.
Anything that needs charging or an account.
A countdown to a return date that is not confirmed. Postings get extended. That is the standard experience, not the exception, and a countdown against a soft date is the one gift that makes an extension worse.
When to send nothing
When they have asked you not to. Some postings make receiving parcels genuinely awkward — storage, inspection, the optics of it among colleagues.
When the address is unresolved. Wait. A parcel into an uncertain forwarding chain is a worry, not a gift.
When they are about to return. The last month is not the moment. Save it for home.
When the useful thing is at your end. Handling something here — a bank, a parent, a bill, a school — is worth more than any object arriving there, and it is the gift only you can give.
Timing
5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, flat ₹70 anywhere in India. Dispatch is weekly on Mondays, so a Friday order catches that week’s dispatch and a weekend order waits seven days. Add two to four days for design and your proof approval.
⚠️ Those figures are to a normal Indian address. Onward transit to a posting is on top and is not something we can predict — build in whatever they tell you, and prefer giving it in person before they leave.
Frequently asked
What should I send a partner on a long posting? Written things in quantity, something numbered to open on a schedule, and printed photographs. Nothing perishable, valuable, or needing a charger.
When should I send it? Ideally before they go, dated to be opened later. Delivery to a posting address is unpredictable, so decoupling the gift from the date removes the disappointment.
Do you deliver to a posting address? We deliver to normal Indian addresses in 5 to 14 days, flat ₹70. Onward transit to a unit, camp or site is beyond that and beyond what we can predict — ask them what actually reaches them.
Is a countdown a good idea? Only against a confirmed return date. Postings get extended routinely, and a countdown against a soft date makes an extension considerably worse.
What is the most useful thing I can do? Handle something at this end — a parent, a bill, a bank, a school. It outranks every object on this page and only you can do it.
