A bought-off-a-shelf gift has one leak: where you hide it. A made-to-order one has five, because it takes weeks, involves other people, and arrives on a day nobody chose.
Here is each one and how to close it.
1. The delivery address
⚠️ The biggest leak by a distance, and the easiest to fix.
A parcel arrives across a window of days, not on a date — 5 to 14 days from order, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR. If you live together, it will arrive on the wrong one, and somebody will sign for it.
Send it somewhere else. A sibling, a friend, your parents, your office. Every surprise that goes wrong at this stage goes wrong the same way.
2. The notification emails
Order confirmation, a design proof, a dispatch note, tracking. Four emails, and any of them on a shared laptop or a phone left on a table is the end of it.
Use an email address they do not see. Not the shared household one.
3. The people you asked for photographs
For most personalised gifts you need material from somebody who knows them — a parent, a sibling, a friend.
Tell them plainly that it is a surprise, and give a date. Most leaks here are not deliberate; somebody mentions it in a group chat two weeks later having forgotten.
⚠️ Do not put it in a group they are in. Obvious, and it happens constantly.
4. Your own phone
If you are choosing photographs together in the same room, the screen is the leak. So is a notification banner while the phone is on a table.
Do the choosing somewhere else, and mute the sender.
5. The last week
The stretch where people relax because it has arrived. Then it sits in a cupboard they open.
Keep it somewhere they have no reason to go, and preferably not at home at all — leave it wherever you had it delivered until the day.
| Leak | Fix |
|---|---|
| Delivery | Another address, always |
| Emails | An address they do not see |
| Helpers | Tell them it is a surprise, with a date |
| Your screen | Choose photographs elsewhere, mute alerts |
| The last week | Leave it at the other address |
What is not worth doing
Lying elaborately. A cover story with details is a cover story that can be caught. “I’m picking something up from Rahul” is enough.
Cancelling plans to hide it. People notice absence more than parcels.
Asking them oblique questions about what they want the week before. It is the single most common tell. How to ask what someone wants without ruining it →
If it leaks anyway
Say so and give it early. A surprise that has been discovered and is then pretended about for a week is worse than a gift given on a Tuesday.
The object is unaffected. The surprise was a bonus.
The one you cannot close
Worth knowing so it is not a shock: for a personalised gift you often need their photographs, and there is no way to get those without either asking them or asking somebody with access.
Asking a third person is the only clean route, and it works for most gifts — a parent, a sibling or a partner usually has enough.
⚠️ If nobody else has the photographs, the surprise has a ceiling. In that case the honest move is to give up on it being a surprise and make it a shared project instead, which is not a lesser gift — choosing photographs together is an evening most couples enjoy more than the unveiling.
Frequently asked
How do I stop a surprise gift being discovered? Deliver it to a different address, use an email they do not see, and tell anyone helping that it is a surprise.
Where should a surprise gift be delivered? Anywhere but a shared home. Made-to-order arrives across a window of days, so it will land on the wrong one.
What about the emails? Four of them — confirmation, proof, dispatch, tracking. Use an address they never see.
What if someone tells them by accident? Give it early rather than pretending for a week. The object is unaffected.
Should I make up a cover story? Keep it minimal. A detailed cover story is one that can be caught out.
