Personalised Gifts for Sister That Beat a Gift Card

A sibling archive is the deepest most people have and the least used. What to make from it, why unsentimental works better, and what it costs from ₹270.

You have twenty years of photographs with your sister and almost none of them printed. That is the deepest shared archive most people have and the least used one — and it is why sibling gifts made from it land harder than anything bought.

A gift card says I could not think. Twenty years in order says I was there for all of it.

Why sibling books work better than couple books

Because you are not trying to be moving.

Couples make reverent books — the good photographs, the tender captions. Siblings make funny ones: the terrible haircut, the argument in the back of the car, the nickname nobody outside the family understands. Those land harder, because affection expressed sideways is more convincing than affection expressed directly.

Unsentimental is the register. Do not fight it.

The three strongest briefs

The childhood archive. Requires a raid on your parents’ boxes, which is the real work — old photographs are printed, scattered and undigitised. Allow two to three weeks for sourcing before you order anything.

One specific year. The year she moved out, the year of the exams, the year everything changed. A constraint makes a book; “everything, from the beginning” makes a catalogue.

A card deck of in-jokes. One image and one line per card, thirty to fifty of them. It is the most tactile format and the one that suits a relationship made of many small specific things rather than a few big ones — which is what most sibling relationships actually are.

Rakhi, specifically

Raksha Bandhan is the largest sibling-gifting window in India and the one most likely to carry a real object rather than a consumable.

The archive is already there. The occasion is annual and known in advance, which removes the usual excuse for ordering late.

Captions, which carry sibling books entirely

“Cherish these memories” is worse than nothing on a sibling book — it reads as though someone outside the family wrote it.

What works: the specifics only two people know. The name of the dog. The holiday where the car broke down. The thing she said at your graduation. Five or six of those carry a whole book, and they are the reason a designer needs a brief rather than just a folder of images.

What it costs

₹270 for 30 polaroid-style prints · ₹499 for an 8-page magazine · ₹699 for 24 pages · ₹1,099 for 40 pages · from ₹999 for a card deck · ₹1,299 upward for a lay-flat album.

5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR. We dispatch every Monday, so ordering by a Friday rather than over a weekend can save a full week.

When to give something else

When you have almost no photographs together. Some siblings genuinely do not. A well-chosen ordinary gift is better than a padded book.

When she asked for something specific. Buy that. Siblings are usually direct about this, which is an advantage — use it.

When there is a live rift. A comprehensive record of the relationship reads as a demand for a reaction. Something small and specific leaves room; a 40-page retrospective does not.

When the date is in three days. Made-to-order takes 5 to 14 days. A gift card now and the real thing later beats a rushed book.

Frequently asked

What is a good personalised gift for a sister? Something from the shared childhood archive — a photo magazine in order, a card deck of in-jokes, or prints for her wall. The archive is deeper than you think and almost none of it is printed.

How do I get old childhood photographs? From your parents, usually in boxes and albums. Photograph the prints in daylight, flat and square on, no flash. Allow two to three weeks — sourcing takes longer than printing.

How much should I spend? ₹500 to ₹1,100 covers a properly made keepsake. A print pack at ₹270 is honest if the archive is thin.

What should the captions say? The specifics only the two of you know. Generic captions land worse on a sibling book than on any other kind, because the register is meant to be unsentimental.

How long does it take? 5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, flat ₹70 to any pin code.
