Twenty-five gets a silver jubilee and a party. Fifty gets a golden one and the whole family travelling. Thirty gets a phone call, and it is the most commonly under-marked milestone in Indian family life.
That is an argument for doing something rather than against it. There is no template to follow, no expectation to meet, and nothing you do will be compared to what an aunt did last year.
Why thirty is the right year for an archive
There is a practical reason, and it is the best argument on this page.
Thirty years married usually means both sets of grandparents’ albums still exist and at least some of the people who can identify the photographs are still around to ask. At fifty, a noticeable share of that is gone — the aunts who knew who was in the 1978 photograph, the albums that went in a house clearance.
The material is at its best now, and it does not improve with waiting.

One photograph per year is the edit that works. Thirty images, thirty slots, in order. It turns an impossible choice into thirty small ones and it shows you immediately which years have no surviving material.
Where the other milestones are covered
The neighbouring years have their own conventions and their own pages — the silver jubilee at twenty-five and fifty years, both of which are family projects on a larger scale.
Thirty sits deliberately between them: bigger than a card, smaller than a production.
What thirty years can carry that ten cannot
Their wedding, printed properly. Most couples married thirty years have a wedding album that is deteriorating, in one copy, in a cupboard. Reproducing it is the single most reliable gift at this milestone and almost nobody thinks of it.
The years the children remember and they do not. Ask your siblings what they remember about 1997. You will collect things your parents have entirely forgotten, and reading them is the part that lands.
The house, or the houses. Thirty years is usually two or three homes. Photographs of each, including whichever ones still stand, make a spine for the book.
Doing it with siblings
Thirty is a milestone where the children are all adults and mostly earning, which makes a pooled gift straightforward.
Divide by source, not by money: one person handles the wedding album, one handles the relatives, one handles the recent years, one writes. A single person doing all of it takes two months. Four people doing a quarter each takes three weeks.
Agree who writes the lines. Four voices in one book is visible and it reads as a committee. Collect from everyone, let one person write.
The unglamorous option
If an archive project is not realistic, the reliable alternative at this milestone is the trip they have not taken.
Thirty years in, most couples have been on family holidays and very few have been away alone since the children arrived. Booking that, specifically and with the dates fixed, outperforms almost any object.
What to avoid
A card and dinner. That is what thirty usually gets, which is exactly the problem.
Anything engraved with the years. Thirty-one arrives.
A large surprise party, unless you know they want one. Milestone parties are frequently thrown for the extended family rather than the couple.
Rewriting the marriage as a fairy tale. Thirty years contains difficult stretches, and a book that pretends otherwise reads as a greetings card. Specifics, including the hard years, are what makes it theirs.
When to do something smaller
When one of them is unwell. A celebration that requires energy is not always a kindness.
When the marriage is strained. It happens at every length, and a commemorative object is a poor instrument in that situation.
When you have three weeks. Thirty years of archive is not a three-week job. Give something small on the date and do the real thing for thirty-one, which is unexpected and therefore better.
Timing
5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, flat ₹70 anywhere. Dispatch is weekly on Mondays, so a Friday order catches that week’s dispatch and a weekend order waits seven days. Add two to four days for design and your proof approval.
Start two months out. Collecting from relatives and getting a wedding album digitised is the bulk of it; printing is under a fortnight.
Frequently asked
What is a 30th wedding anniversary called? The pearl anniversary. Unlike silver at twenty-five and gold at fifty, it carries no established ceremony in most Indian families, which is why it tends to get missed.
What should children give parents for 30 years of marriage? A record of the thirty years, one photograph per year, or their wedding album reproduced properly. Both use material that is at its best right now.
Why is thirty a good year for a photo archive? Because the albums and the people who can identify the photographs mostly still exist. By fifty, a meaningful share of both is gone.
How many pages does thirty years need? About four photographs fill a page, so 24 to 32 pages — roughly 96 to 128 images.
How should siblings split the work? By source rather than by money: one takes the wedding album, one the relatives, one the recent years, one writes. Let a single person write, or the book reads as a committee.
