A first anniversary has an unusual property: it is the first occasion where you have exactly enough material and not too much. One year is roughly one book. By year five you are editing down; at three months there is nothing to edit. Year one is the sweet spot, and most people spend it on something that is gone by Thursday.

Rank is not the same as quality. Number nine, an experience, is often the best gift on this list — it is simply not an object, so it does not compete on this axis. And number five outranks most things if you already know she will wear it.
Why the top four are the same idea
They all do one thing: turn a year you both lived through into something that can be picked up.
A year is not memorable by default. Twelve months from now the trip in March will have collapsed into three images and one story, and the ordinary Tuesday when something small and funny happened will be gone entirely. An edit made now, while you still remember which Tuesday, is the only version of the year that survives.
