Gifts for a Boyfriend Moving Abroad for Work or Study

Every gift now costs him baggage allowance, and that changes the answer completely. What survives a 23 kg limit, and what to send after he has landed.

Moving abroad imposes a constraint nothing else does: every gift you give now has to be carried, and it is competing against his own possessions for a hard weight limit.

Twenty-three kilos, usually, sometimes two bags. Into that he has to fit clothes for a climate he has never lived in, documents, medication, a laptop, and whatever from home he cannot replace there. A gift that weighs half a kilo is asking him to leave something behind.

That single fact reorders everything.

The three windows

Window When Constraint What fits
Before he flies The last fortnight Baggage weight Flat, light, or nothing
The first month After he lands Shipping cost and customs Small, posted
Settled Month three onward Almost none Whatever you want

The second window is the one that matters and the one nobody uses. The fortnight before he leaves is crowded — every relative is feeding him and every friend is saying goodbye. Month one is when he is alone in a room in a country where he knows nobody, eating badly, and nothing has arrived for him in weeks.

If you only do one, do the second.

Before he flies: flat, light, or nothing

Good:

  • Something flat that slides into a laptop sleeve
  • A letter, or several, marked with when to open them
  • The documents problem solved — printed copies, organised, in a folder
  • Food from home that is legal to carry and survives the flight
  • Nothing at all, and the airport run instead

Check the food rules before you pack anything. Australia and New Zealand in particular will bin it at the border and fine him, and several countries will not let dairy or meat through at all. A confiscated gift is a bad start to a first day.

Bad: anything framed, anything ceramic, anything that needs a shelf, anything heavy enough to show up on a scale.

After he lands: the one that counts

A printed record is unusually well suited to this window. It is flat, it goes on a bare wall or a bare desk, and it is the thing least likely to exist in his new room — which will be furnished, generic, and completely without evidence that he has a life somewhere else.

Format Holds Ours
Print pack 30 loose photographs, straight onto a bare wall ₹270
Photo magazine 32 to 160 images, in order, with words ₹499 to ₹1,099
Photo diary A record plus blank pages for the new place ₹699 to ₹1,299
Card deck 30 to 60 short specifics From ₹999

About four photographs fill a page, so two or three years is usually 16 to 24 pages.

⚠️ We ship within India only, flat ₹70. For anything crossing a border, the practical route is to have it made and delivered here, then carried out by him or by whoever visits next — which is also far cheaper than posting it and avoids customs entirely. If someone is flying out in the first couple of months, that is your delivery.

What this is really about

Be honest about which situation you are in, because the gift follows from it.

If the plan is that he goes and you follow, this is a farewell to a city. If he is going and you are staying indefinitely, this is the start of a long-distance relationship, whether either of you has said the phrase yet — and that has different rules, covered in long distance gifts that are not another video call.

Handing over a long-distance gift at a farewell dinner is a conversation, not a present. Have the conversation first.

The unglamorous things that actually help

Not gifts exactly, and better than most gifts:

  • A shared document with every account, policy and document number
  • Being the person who handles one thing here for him — a bank, a bill, a parcel
  • Knowing the time difference without doing the arithmetic out loud each time
  • Not needing him to be available on your schedule in the first month

When not to give anything

When he is over his baggage allowance. He will not tell you. Ask, and if the answer is tight, give him nothing to carry and send it later.

When the move is uncertain. Visas fall through and offers get withdrawn. A farewell gift given early is awkward to be holding if the date moves.

When he is anxious rather than excited. Plenty of people move abroad frightened. Loud celebration reads as not having noticed.

When the money would be better as the visit. A ticket beats every object on this page and it is not close. If a flight is realistic, put it there instead.

Timing

5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, flat ₹70 anywhere in India. Dispatch is weekly on Mondays, so a Friday order catches that week’s dispatch and a weekend order waits seven days. Add two to four days for design and your proof approval.

Work backwards from the flight, not from the goodbye. If it has to be carried, it needs to be in his hands with a week to spare, so order about a month before he goes.

Frequently asked

What should I give a boyfriend moving abroad? Something flat and light, or nothing before he flies and something posted once he has landed. Every gift competes with his baggage allowance.

When is the best time to give it? The first month after he lands. The fortnight before he leaves is crowded; month one is when nothing has arrived for him in weeks.

Can you deliver a gift outside India? No — delivery is within India, flat ₹70. The practical route is to have it made here and carried out by him or by the next person visiting, which avoids customs and costs less than posting.

What should I not pack for him? Anything framed, ceramic or heavy, and any food you have not checked against the destination’s import rules. Several countries will confiscate it at the border.

How many photographs do I need for a record of us? About four fill a page, so two or three years is usually 16 to 24 pages — roughly 64 to 96 images.
