Making a photo book yourself means doing four jobs a studio would otherwise do — choosing the photographs, laying out the pages, writing the words and checking every one of them — and handing over only the printing. It is entirely doable on a laptop in the evenings. The result is exactly as good as your eye, and the stage most people underestimate is not the design. It is the choosing.
We sit on both sides of this. We design books for people, and we also print magazines that people have designed themselves. So this guide says where making it yourself is the better route, and where it is not.
Three ways to make it yourself

This guide is mostly about the second: you design it, a printer prints it, and the file is yours to take anywhere.
Decide the finished object before anything else
Size, page count and binding decide every layout choice that follows, so choose the printer before you open any software.
If you print with us, the object is fixed and simple: an A4 portrait magazine (210 × 297 mm), 8 to 40 pages with the cover counted, stapled, on a 300 GSM matte cover and 170 GSM inner pages — the same paper as the magazines we design. Page counts go up in fours, because a stapled magazine is sheets folded in half.

Delivery is a flat ₹70 an order, however many copies. Matte or gloss lamination is optional at ₹10 a page — ₹20 for the front and back cover.

Gather the originals first
Collect before you design, and collect the real files. A photograph forwarded through a chat app is usually a compressed copy — fine on a phone, soft on an A4 page. Ask people to send originals as documents, or to share a folder.
A photograph needs roughly 300 pixels for every inch it will be printed at, so a full A4 page wants about 2,400 pixels across. Most phone photographs of the last decade have that; most forwarded ones do not. What photo resolution you need for printing →
Choose, then choose again
This is where the hours go. A year on a phone is often well over a thousand photographs, and a 24-page book holds a fraction of them. Make three passes: everything worth a look, then everything worth a place, then the few that deserve a page of their own. Sequence by story rather than by date wherever the story is clearer that way. Use a tool you already know
Almost any free design tool can make a photo book. The ones that fail, fail at the last step: the export. Before choosing, check it can set an exact A4 portrait page, export a single PDF, keep photographs at full resolution and embed its fonts. Free software for designing a photo book →
Lay it out with a few fixed rules
Pick two or three page layouts and repeat them. A book with a different arrangement on every page reads as busy, and takes far longer to make.
Keep text well inside the edge. At least 5 mm inside the trim, and more is safer. Anything meant to run off the edge needs 3 mm of extra image beyond it — the bleed. If your tool cannot add bleed, keep a white border all round and you need none.
Mind the fold. A photograph across two facing pages runs into the fold down the middle. Keep faces out of it.
Leave space. Empty paper is what makes a good photograph look deliberate.
Design the cover last. By the final page you know what the book is about, and the cover should say that — one photograph, a title and perhaps a date. A cover designed first tends to promise a different book from the one inside it. Photo book layout: how spreads actually work →
Write the words in a document, not on the page
Draft every caption, the first page and the last page in a plain document, where you can read them as writing. Then paste them in. Proofread as if a stranger made it
When you design it yourself, nobody else reads it. Our file check covers the page count, the size and the image quality — not spelling, names or page order, which stay yours.

Read every name aloud, and hand the file to one other person. Fresh eyes find in five minutes what yours stopped seeing on the second evening.
Export, send and print
The file we print from is one PDF, A4 portrait, pages in reading order, exactly the page count you ordered, with 3 mm bleed on every side if anything runs to the edge, text at least 5 mm inside the trim, images at 300 dpi and fonts embedded. Share it as a link — Google Drive, WeTransfer or Dropbox — at checkout or on WhatsApp. We check the file, message you if anything needs fixing, and once you confirm, it prints exactly as sent. Keep your own copy of the PDF and the working file. We delete print files seven days after dispatch, so a second copy next year means sending the file again — and the working file is the only place a typo can still be fixed.

Frequently asked
Is it cheaper to make a photo book yourself? In money, yes: an 8-page magazine printed from your file is ₹299 against ₹499 designed by us, and 40 pages is ₹699 against ₹1,099. The difference buys the design, a proof and changes. Your evenings are the other half of the price.
What software do I need to design a photo book? Anything that exports an A4 PDF at full resolution with the fonts embedded. Most free design tools can; check the export before you start, not after.
Will you check my spelling? No. The check is page count, size and image quality. Spelling, names and page order are yours, which is why a second reader matters.
Can I have several copies of my file printed? Yes — up to 20 copies of a file on one order line on the site, at the same price per copy, and more by message.
Can you design part of it and print the rest? They are two separate services. The print service prints your finished file with no design; a designed magazine is laid out by our designer from your photographs and words, so your shortlist and captions carry straight over.
