What to Write in an Anniversary Card

The card written to somebody who already knows everything in it. What that rules out, what a year actually gives you, and the one line worth repeating.

An anniversary card has a problem birthday cards do not: it is written to somebody who already knows everything in it.

They were there for the year. They know how it went, what was hard, and how you feel about them. Nothing you write is information, which is why so many anniversary cards default to general warmth — there seems to be nothing left to say.

There is, and it is smaller than people reach for.

What a year actually gives you

Something they did that you have not mentioned. A year contains dozens of them, and most go unremarked at the time. Naming one, months later, proves you noticed — which is the only thing an anniversary card can actually deliver.

A specific ordinary day. Not the holiday. The Tuesday, the drive, the hospital waiting room, the argument in the car park that turned out to be funny.

Something you have changed your mind about. Rare in a card and the one that gets kept.

One thing you are looking forward to, named specifically.

What to skip

Skip Why
A summary of the year They were there
“Here’s to many more” A toast, not a sentence
Anything about how fast time goes Universally felt, tells them nothing
A comparison to other couples Never lands the way it is meant
The number, as the whole subject Twelve is not an achievement, the twelve years are

By year, roughly

A first anniversary. The most material to work with — a year of firsts and everything is still surprising. This is the card that can be longest.

Middle years. Hardest, because the year contained nothing announceable. That is exactly when a specific ordinary day is worth more than anything else you could write. Seventh anniversary gift ideas →

A milestone — twenty-five, fifty. Often read aloud, or read by other people. Write it knowing that, which usually means less private and more specific about the years. Anniversary photo books, year by year →

The line worth repeating every year

⚠️ Contrary to everything above about avoiding repetition: one line can be the same every year on purpose.

A single sentence, unchanged, in every anniversary card for a decade, becomes something else entirely by year seven. It stops being a sentence and becomes a fixture — and the year you forget it will be noticed.

Pick one that is true and plain enough to survive being read ten times.

After a hard year

The honest case, and it comes up more than cards allow for.

Do not write the year up. A card insisting a bad year was wonderful is a card that has to be agreed with, which is work.

Mark that it happened and that you are both still here. That is a complete anniversary card and it is more welcome than an upgrade. The anniversary after a hard year →

If you are both writing one

Common, and it is worth agreeing on one thing in advance: whether you are exchanging cards or writing in the same one.

Two cards. Each written without seeing the other. The pleasure is in the overlap — both of you naming the same unremarkable Tuesday is the thing people talk about afterwards.

One card, both writing. Different, and better kept: a single object accumulating two handwritings, year after year, is a record neither of you would have made deliberately.

⚠️ Do not read theirs before writing yours. It turns the second one into a response, and a response is always the weaker of the two.

Frequently asked

What should I write in an anniversary card? Something they did that you have not mentioned, one specific ordinary day, and one thing you are looking forward to.

What should I avoid? A summary of the year, anything about how fast time goes, and the number as the whole subject.

What if nothing happened this year? Then a specific ordinary day is worth more than anything else. The unremarkable years are where noticing counts most.

Can I write the same thing every year? One line, deliberately. By year seven it stops being a sentence and becomes a fixture.

What if the year was difficult? Mark that it happened and that you are both still here. Do not write it up as wonderful.
