Engagement Gift Ideas for the Couple

The engagement is where close friends should give, because it is the one ceremony where a gift is actually opened. Nine ideas and the two to avoid.

An engagement has one advantage over the wedding that almost nobody uses: the gift gets opened. Sixty people, a smaller table, and an afternoon with time in it. On the wedding day the same gift joins a pile that is loaded into a car and unwrapped a week later by whoever is least tired.

If you are close to the couple, this is the ceremony to give at.

What the occasion actually is

The couple are not yet a household. They may not be living together, may not have a shared address, and the wedding is months away. That rules out most of the traditional gift table — you are not furnishing anything yet.

What is true instead is that the relationship has just been made public, often after years of it not being. That is the thing to mark.

Nine that work

1. The story so far, printed. Their own photographs, laid out with the timeline in it — how they met, the years nobody at the party saw. An 8-page magazine is ₹499; 24 pages is ₹699. Love Story Magazine →

2. A deck of reasons. The 27-card deck at ₹999 or the 52-card at ₹1,699, one card per memory. Reads better in a room full of people than a book does. Photo Card Deck →

3. Prints of the proposal. Whatever was shot on a phone twenty minutes after, printed as a pack — from ₹270 for thirty.

4. Something for the two families to look at. An engagement is often the first time both sides meet properly. A printed piece gets passed around a room; a voucher does not.

5. A shared-notes diary. For the year between engagement and wedding, which is longer and more eventful than anyone expects. Photo Diary from ₹699

6. The group gift, pooled. Eight friends at ₹300 each buys one substantial thing rather than eight small ones. One book, many contributors →

7. Something for the wedding, given early. A gift the couple can actually use during the months of planning beats one that waits.

8. An envelope, honestly. For families and for anyone who is not close to them. There is no shame in it and it is what most of the room is doing.

9. Nothing, and a good speech. Sangeet and mehendi run on this. It is not a lesser gift.

Two to avoid

Anything for a home they do not have yet. Crockery, appliances, décor — all of it is premature at an engagement and duplicated at the wedding.

Anything that assumes the wedding date. Dates move. A piece printed with one is a piece that can be wrong.

Who is expected to give

You are Expected at the engagement?
Either family Yes — the exchange runs family to family
A close friend of the couple Increasingly yes, and it is the better ceremony for it
A cousin or extended relative Optional. Follow the family’s lead
A colleague No. The wedding or reception is your occasion

Nobody is counting at an engagement in the way they are on the wedding day, which is exactly what makes it the better place to give something personal.

Timing

5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, dispatched every Monday. Engagements are usually announced with less notice than weddings, so order the day you hear rather than the week before.

Frequently asked

Do I give at the engagement and the wedding? Most people give once. Close friends increasingly choose the engagement, where the gift is opened in front of them.

How much should an engagement gift cost? Less than a wedding gift, and there is no expectation at all if you are giving at the wedding instead.

Is a photo gift too personal for an engagement? Only if you are not close to them. If you are, it is the one gift at the party that could not have been bought for anyone else.

Can I get it printed with the wedding date? You can, but we would not. Dates move, and a printed date that turns out wrong ages badly.

What if I cannot attend? Send it to a home address rather than the venue, and put something handwritten in it. That is the part that stands in for you.
