Brothers get gifted badly and the reason is structural rather than personal: nobody asks them anything.
Ask a sister what she wants and you get an answer. Ask a brother and you get “anything”, “don’t bother”, or a shrug — and because that is unhelpful, people fall back on the default four: a shirt, a wallet, a bottle, something for his phone.
He does not want those either. He just did not give you enough to go on.
The three that always work
1. The thing he complained about. Brothers do not state preferences, but they complain freely. The bag strap, the chair, the useless charger, the shoes that leak. Every complaint is a gift request that has not been recognised as one.
Keep a note on your phone for a month before his birthday. You will have four options by the end of it and none of them requires asking.
2. The good version he refuses to buy. He is using the cheap one because the good one felt indulgent. He will use it daily and mention where it came from every time.
3. The record he cannot make. Covered below, and it is the one with no substitute.
The archive advantage
You have something no one else buying for him has: the same childhood.
Your parents’ albums, the house, the summers, the school years, the version of him at nine. Nobody else in his life — not his friends, not a partner — has access to any of that, and he does not have it in any usable form either.

Keep it shorter than you think and funnier than you think. The failure mode with a brother is over-sentimentality — a book that reads like a eulogy. The register that works is the one the two of you actually use with each other, which in most sibling relationships is closer to mockery than to tenderness.
How to build it covers the selection and the captions.
Sorted by what you have
| You have | Give |
|---|---|
| A month and access to old photos | The childhood record |
| A week and a good memory | The complaint he made in March |
| An afternoon | The good version of a daily object |
| No money | A written list of specifics, and a day |
What Indian brothers actually get given
Worth listing, because the pattern is so consistent: shirts, wallets, watches, perfume, whatever gadget is current, and cash at festivals.
None of it is wrong. All of it is fungible — any of those could have come from anyone, which is the one property a gift from a sibling should not have.
Rakhi is the exception and it has its own conventions, including when cash is genuinely the right answer. What to give at Raksha Bandhan covers that properly.
What to avoid
Anything requiring him to have taste he has not demonstrated. Décor, art, clothing beyond the basics.
A “world’s best brother” object. He will laugh and shelve it.
Anything he has to maintain or set up. If it needs an afternoon of configuring, it stays in the box.
Anything sentimental delivered publicly. In front of the family, at a function, with people watching. Give it to him privately and let him react however he wants.
When something ordinary is better
When he told you what he wants. Buy it. This is the most reliable information available and people talk themselves out of it constantly.
When you barely see each other. A high-intimacy gift into a distant relationship is an imposition. Something good and uncomplicated is the right register.
When the age gap is large. Ten years apart means very little genuinely shared childhood, and a record built on it will be thin. Check the material first.
When there is money trouble in the family. Objects read badly in that context. Take something off his plate instead.
Timing
5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, flat ₹70 anywhere. Dispatch is weekly on Mondays, so a Friday order catches that week’s dispatch and a weekend order waits seven days. Add two to four days for design and your proof approval.
For a childhood record, allow four to six weeks. Getting the old prints out of your parents’ house without explaining why is most of it.
Frequently asked
What is a good personalised gift for a brother? A record of the childhood you shared, which nobody else in his life can make, or the good version of something he uses daily and refuses to spend on.
He says he does not want anything. What do I do? Stop asking and start listening. Brothers do not state preferences but they complain freely, and every complaint is an unrecognised gift request.
What tone should a photo book for a brother have? Closer to mockery than to tenderness, in most sibling relationships. Over-sentimentality is the usual failure and it reads as a eulogy.
How many photographs do I need? About four fill a page, so 16 to 24 pages — roughly 64 to 96 images for a shared childhood.
What if we are ten years apart? Check the archive before planning a childhood book. A large gap means far fewer genuinely shared years than the relationship suggests.
