Gifts for a Child Starting or Changing School

Starting school and changing school are opposite problems — one is arrival, the other is loss. What each needs, and what to give a child leaving friends.

These look like one occasion and they are opposites.

Starting school is an arrival. The child is excited or frightened about something new, and the gift is about the beginning.

Changing school is a loss first. There is a class they are leaving, friends whose names will fade, and a building they knew — and everybody around them is treating it as an adventure, which is not how it feels from inside.

Getting this the wrong way round is the commonest mistake here, and it is usually made by buying a bright new-beginnings gift for a nine-year-old in mourning.

Starting school, at five or six

What actually helps is anything that reduces the number of unfamiliar things on the first day.

Works Why
Their name on everything Reduces the daily losses; they can find their own things
Something familiar to carry A known object in an unknown room
A photograph in the bag For the ones who find the separation hard
A small routine object Predictability is the thing in short supply

The photograph in the bag is the specific one worth knowing. A small print of the family or a pet, tucked in a pocket, is a well-worn answer for a child who struggles with drop-off. It is not sentimental — it is a concrete object they can check.

A print pack is ₹270 for 30, which is enough for the bag, the pencil case, the wall and the grandparents.

Changing school, at eight or twelve

Different job entirely. The child is losing a social world and gaining a logistics problem.

Mark what they are leaving, not what they are going to. A record of the school they are leaving — the class, the friends, the trip, the teacher they liked — is the gift that matches the actual emotion. Everything else in that fortnight is about the new place.

Do it before the last day, because the material stops being collectable the moment they leave. Photographs live on the phones of parents who are about to stop being in a group. How to choose photographs for a photo book

Names, in writing. A child of nine cannot yet know that they will forget the name of the person they sat next to for three years. Capturing the names is the most valuable and least obvious part. Captions that make sense in thirty years

The mistake both cases share

Buying for the parent’s feeling rather than the child’s. A first day is enormous for a parent and moderately interesting to a five-year-old concerned about lunch. A change of school is the reverse. Match the gift to whose event it actually is.

What not to give

School supplies. Being bought anyway, so they are not a present.

Anything to be looked after. A new school is a high-losses environment.

Anything conspicuous on day one. Standing out is not the goal in a new class.

For a child moving cities

The hardest case, because they lose the school and everyone in it. Two things together: a record of the place they left, and something keeping one friendship physically present. Long distance gift ideas

Frequently asked

What is a good gift for a child starting school? Their name on their things, something familiar to carry, and a small photograph for the bag if drop-off is hard.

What should I give a child changing schools? Something about the school they are leaving rather than the one they are joining. The loss is the live emotion and almost nobody addresses it.

When should I give it? Before the last day at the old school, if it is a move. The material becomes hard to collect the moment they leave.

Are school supplies a good gift? No. They are being bought regardless, so they read as a chore rather than a present.

What about a child moving to a new city? Combine a record of the old school with something that keeps one friendship physically present — that specific friendship is what usually survives.
