Worth starting from the teacher’s side, because it changes everything: in the last week of term a class teacher receives twenty to forty gifts, in three days, and carries them home.
Most are chocolates, a mug, a pen set, or a plant. Not because parents lack imagination, but because everybody is solving the problem independently and arriving at the same answer.

A class gift is cheaper per family, better for the teacher, and the only version that produces something they keep. It requires one parent to organise it, which is the entire obstacle.
What a class gift should be
Something with the children in it.
A teacher’s year is thirty children, and a year-end gift that contains none of them is a gift that could have gone to any teacher in the school.

If you are giving individually
Keep it small and keep it flat. They are carrying it home on a scooter or in an auto with twenty-nine other things.
The letter is the gift. Written by the child, in the child’s handwriting, saying one specific thing. Teachers keep these — genuinely, for decades — and they keep almost nothing else.
Do not give anything perishable in a Delhi June, and do not give another mug.
The policy question
Some schools cap the value of gifts or ask that they go to the school rather than to individuals, and a few prohibit them entirely.
Check before organising a class collection. It is a short question to the class group and it saves an awkward return.
Organising a class gift, in five steps
The obstacle is never the money. It is that somebody has to run it.
- Check the school policy first. One message to the class group.
- Set the amount low — ₹50 to ₹100 — and say the cap out loud. An unstated amount makes people guess upwards and then resent it.
- Ask for photographs and one line per child, with a deadline a week before you need it. Ask for originals rather than forwards.
- Collect the money last. People pay quickly for something that already exists and slowly for something that might.
- Order with a week of slack. 5 to 14 days from order, and results week is busy.
