Five is the first birthday most people have any memory of, which changes the job. Up to four the gift is for the parents. From five it is genuinely for the child, and the child has opinions, a short attention span, and hands.
The constraint is durability, not taste
A five-year-old does not put a book on a shelf. They carry it, sit on it, take it to bed, show it to someone by pushing it into their face, and leave it under a chair.

Prints they can own, from ₹270 for thirty. Give a child thirty photographs of themselves and they will put them somewhere. That is the entire mechanism.
A short magazine, ₹499 for 8 pages, of one thing — a holiday, a school year, the dog. Not their whole life; five-year-olds do not read long things.

What to skip
Anything about how much they have grown. That is a gift for adults wearing a child’s wrapping paper. Five-year-olds are not nostalgic and will put it down.
A big expensive book. The nicest object on this page is the one least likely to be picked up.
