How Many Photos Do You Need for a Photo Magazine?

A quick reference guide on calculating photo counts, selecting hero images, and sharing files on WhatsApp.

One of the most common questions customers ask us before ordering a custom photo magazine is: “How many photos should I send?” Here is our rule of thumb.

The 4-Photos-Per-Page Rule

To achieve a balanced, magazine-style layout with a mix of full-bleed hero spreads, 2-photo collages, and 4-photo grids, we recommend sending an average of 4 photos per page.

Magazine SizeRecommended Photo CountBest Used For
8 Pages30 to 35 photos (~32)Mini birthday gift, quick trip, single event
16 Pages60 to 70 photos (~64)Anniversary story, weekend getaway, farewell zine
20 Pages75 to 85 photos (~80)Pre-wedding shoot, annual milestone review
32 Pages120 to 135 photos (~128)Full wedding magazine, multi-city travel trip
40 Pages150 to 170 photos (~160)Complete wedding archive, 25th anniversary zine

Tips for Selecting & Sending Photos

  • Select Cover Shots: Pick 2–3 high-resolution portrait photos with space for title text to be used as your magazine cover.
  • Mix Close-ups & Wide Shots: A good magazine layout pairs wide landscape photos (for double-page spreads) with candid close-ups.
  • WhatsApp Document Sharing: Share photos on WhatsApp as “Documents” rather than standard compressed images to preserve original camera resolution.
